Katrineholm’s frozen bandy court

At Katrineholm’s sport center, waste heat from the artificially frozen bandy court’s compressors is used to heat the adjacent football field’s plastic surface. An important enabling component of the system is an energy store in which heat is conserved under ground.

The production of artificial cooling for the sport center’s bandy court gives rise to large amounts of waste heat. Instead of letting this energy warm the surrounding air, it is stored in an energy store, consisting of 91 drilled holes, two circulation pumps and eight heat pumps. The heat pumps raise the temperature of the water stored in the holes, so that it can be used to melt ice and snow from the football field. Also during the summer energy is added to the energy store, since the football field works as a giant solar panel, collecting heat from the sun.

Katrineholm’s sport center saves large quantities of energy by gathering waste heat in an energy store. It is a very energy efficient solution, which clearly demonstrates that losses can be minimized by combining a systems perspective with environmental technology.

By allowing the football field to gather energy during the summer, there is at present a large quantity of excess heat in the energy store.
