The windfarm in lake Vänern is located in the northern parts of the lake, the area is categorized as a national interest for wind power, due to its windy conditions. The plant consists of ten wind turbines, each with a power of 3 MW, meaning that the entire plant has a capacity of 30 MW and is expected to produce 89 GWh each year, provided normal wind conditions. The production corresponds to the annual consumption of 20 000 private houses. Each turbine consists of a 90 meter high tower and has three 49 meter long rotor blades. The plant was built in 2009 and is owned by the consortium Vindpark Vänern.
The wind farm is unique, since it is the first wind power plant in the world built offshore in a lake. The establishing of the park therefore also aims to generate and distribute knowledge about wind power plants located off shore. In this case knowledge about logistical solutions during the construction phase, together with solutions to anchor the foundations of the turbines to the rock has been especially stressed. The experiences gathered primarily during the construction phase, but also from running the wind farm is hoped for to promote a more cost efficient establishment of off shore wind power plants. If construction of wind turbines off shore becomes cheaper and more cost efficient it would be most beneficial to Sweden, due to its long coast and many lakes.
