By location in one and the same place, the condenser heat from the cooling machines for the indoor ice hockey rink and the outdoor bandy rink can be used for heating the whole plant – the water in the three different pools, air and most of the tap water – during the hockey and bandy season. One of the cooling machines is also used as heat pump when the bandy rink is inactive. It then heats tap water, bathing water and water for heating the buildings within the plant.
The heat in the shower water is utilized through a heat exchanger before the water is discharged into the waste water system and thus it heats the incoming water as a first step. The heating system is connected to the district heating system in Oskarshamn to be able to purchase heat when necessary.
An important decision was to work with as few suppliers as possible. By using only one make for the control of all technical functions the interface problem between different systems is removed, this gives the personnel the possibility to run the system in an optimal way. The system is fully computerized. Air quality, temperatures, water quality, recycling capacity, pressure and water levels are continuously measured. Parameters can be controlled or changed by the operator and his PC. When he is not there he receives an SMS on his mobile phone if something happens that needs correction. The system is web-based, which gives the possibilities for surveillance and fault correction without being on-site.
Plant facts
Ice production and water heating are by far the most energy-consuming processes of the plant. There is approx. 1.000 m3 bathing water to be warmed up in the swimming pools. The bandy rink ice area is approx. 7.000 m2 and the hockey rink approx. 2 000 m2.
Statement
”When we started planning a new swimming bath, we got the idea of placing it in connection to the indoor ice rink at an early stage. We saw the possibility of utilizing the excess heat from the ice production instead of wasting it. In this way we would be able to save energy and reduce the operational costs for the plant. By the co-location we could also create an effective service organization for the whole Arena Oskarshamn. As everything is controlled by one superior system, the personnel have an even better control of the different sections of the plant.
At present we save approx. 1.000.000 kWh yearly. This means a reduced emission of carbon dioxide of more than 600 tonnes a year!
We also work with another recycling project, which will bring additional savings of at least 500.000 kWh yearly and reduced emissions of carbon dioxide by more than 300 tonnes. Besides the economical profits, these achievements will give great environmental return.”
