Sustainable fuel

Most of the gas is transported to the bus depot through pipelines, where it is made available to city buses, garbage trucks and light vehicles. The facility also supplies biogas to Trollhättan Energy’s filling station in Lilla Edet and to several other cities.
The production of biogas uses sewage sludge and by-products from the food industry as raw material. It begins with fermentation in certain fermentation chambers, which results in methane, carbon dioxide and water. The mixture is then, together with gas from Heljestorp, purified in an upgrading unit and turned into environmentally friendly biogas.
Biogas has about 93 percent less environmental impact than conventional gasoline and is accordingly a very environmentally efficient fuel. It does not contribute with a net addition of green house gas to the atmosphere and the local emissions of particles are low. At present, 17 buses, 11 garbage trucks, 100 of the municipality’s cars and a number of private cars are driven by the 1 600 000 cubic meters of gas produced at Arvidstorp each year.
