Heat, steam and electricity is produced out of renewable resources

The plant produces 70 GWh heat, steam and electricity per year, which covers the need of about 5,000 buildings.

The produced steam passes through a turbine that generates electricity. The steam is then condensed and the released energy is used to heat water from the district heating system. In addition, 6-9 GWh of the produced energy is sold to Stora Enso Packaging every year. It covers the full need for heat and steam in their production processes.

The water in a combined heat and power plant circulates in a closed system. It is pumped to the households through pipes. After having heated the buildings through heat exchangers, the cooled water returns to the plant for reheating. There are a total of 54 kilometers of district heating pipes in the municipality.

Assbergsverket indirectly reduces emissions of greenhouse gases and other hazardous matter significantly. Emissions of nitric oxide from customers that connect their homes to the district heating system, and stops using their oil fuelled furnaces, have decreased from 300 kg/MWh to 4,4 kg/MWh over the past five years.
