By-products turn into biopellets

The process starts off with Skånefrö generating large amounts of organic biomass in their production. Normally, these by-products are deposited, which has a cost and also lead to emissions of the strong greenhouse gas methane. With the system Bioagro Energy the biomass is instead used to produce biopellets, something that bring both economic and environmental benefits. The costs for depositing are turned to savings when the biopellets replace other fuels and the emissions of greenhouse gases are reduced. Also, the biopellets can be used to produce biochar, which bring additional environmental benefits since it permanently sequesters carbon and improves the quality of soils.

The system is scalable, integrated and consists of mixer, pellet press, silo system, information technology and agropellet furnaces giving 1.5 MW. Bioagro Energy has eliminated all fossil powered heating and drying at Skånefrö AB.

The facility is a part of the EU financed project Bioagro, which has a number of stakeholders, including Skånefrö, the furnace manufacturer HOTAB and the innovation company Ecoera that develops agropellet formulas and possibilities to use biopellets in the production of biochar.
