In addition, the plant produces renewable electric power and district heating. The annual production is 105,000 tons of biopellets, 48 GWh of electricity and 40 GWh of heat.
Unique energy efficiency
The energy combine consists of a biopellet factory combined with a heat and power plant. By integrating these facilities, an energy efficiency of 98 percent is achieved, which makes the plant unique. The fuel mainly consists of energy wood from the region, but peat and by-products from forestry and saw mills can also be used.
Environmental benefits
An important reason for Skellefteå Kraft to start establishing a new energy combine in Storuman was the easy access to raw biomaterial. The environmental benefits from exploiting the plant’s proximity to the raw material, sourced from the region’s forests and sawmills, include reduced transportation distances, thus helping to minimize overall environmental impact. Local forest owners also improve their profitability by contributing raw materials to bioenergy production when thinning out their forest stands.
