Borgholm’s traditional furnace has gradually been transformed into an environmentally efficient district heating plant. A number of measures have contributed to lower environmental impact, where the most important are the replacement of the oil fuelled furnace with bio fuelled boilers and the general optimization of the plant.

Fuel from the local area

The wood chips used as fuel are provided from bushes and trees in Öland and Kalmar, meaning that Borgholm’s district heating plant also contributes to Öland’s goal of being self-sufficient when it comes to energy.

The district heating plant consists of two connected units that together provide the central parts of Borgholm with heat and hot water. There are three boilers in use and the individual capacity of each boiler is 5 MW, 2,5 MW and 2 MW. At top loads, extra capacity is supplied by replaced, but still working, boilers and as a last resort old oil fuelled furnaces are reemployed.

Small-scaled, yet profitable

The plant is operated by Borgholm Energi AB. The commercial basis makes Borgholm’s plant important since it statutes a great example that small-scale district heating can be run with profit. Furthermore, there are substantial environmental advantages; the facility has reduced Borgholm’s need of oil with approximately 3,000 cubic meters per year, which is beneficial for both environmental and economical reasons.
