Fat and sludge become electricity and heat
The plant is very environmentally efficient, since sewage sludge is turned into both biogas and mull.
In order to be self-sufficient when it comes to electricity and heat, fat is collected from restaurants. The fat is digested together with sewage sludge, a by-product from the water cleaning processes. The digestion process produces biogas, consisting of methane and carbon dioxide. Adding fat gives the gas higher energy content. In order to generate electricity and heat, the gas is burnt in a gas motor. The by-products from the digestion process are delivered to an entrepreneur that turns them into mull.
Borlänge sewage plant saves 1.6 MWh per year by producing biogas from sewage sludge, which in addition is a renewable fuel. The production of electricity makes the plant very reliable, especially in the case of disruptions in external electricity supply. When the plant produces too much energy, the surplus is delivered to the city’s district heating system and to the main electricity grid.
