Self-heating housing in Western Harbor, Malmö
Self-heating houses do not require a heat source for heating. This means a minimized environmental impact as well as increased area and cost efficiency. The first self-heating house, with 100 rental apartments, was completed in May 2008. Today, the consumption is approximately 67 Kwh/m2, excluding household electricity, which is approximately 60 percent less than regular consumption.
Self-heating houses are more insulated than standard houses. They are tightly built with a climate-proof shell of concrete and styrofoam, without thermal bridges and with balconies attached to the exterior. The ventilation is an important part of the concept and recycles efficiently, with energy range of 90 percent at average air humidity.
Involved tenants
However, building energy-efficiently alone is not enough. That is why Byggvesta also focuses on the tenant’s energy consumption. In addition to an integrated system for measuring hot water, and that each household pays for its own hot water consumption, the tenants have been given an instruction book with information on how the house is heated and how they can contribute to keeping a low energy consumption.
Minimizing environmental impact is facilitated by offering the tenants a one year subscription to a car pool. The house in Western Harbour also has a bicycle storage facilities and easy-to-access bicycle workshops. Also, electrical supply sources are currently being prepared for electrical cars and mopeds.
