In 2007 Östby’s waste station, situated between Åmål and Säffle, invested in a generator and an internal combustion engine to transform methane gas into electricity. The gas is produced when organic waste is broken down without the supply of oxygen in the dump. The engine has a power of 230 kW and generates electricity corresponding to the consumption of 50 houses. The production is of great advantage from a sustainable perspective, especially when considering that the gas before the installation of the generator was burnt. With the implication that the energy contain of the gas was all lost.
The gas is collected from the dump by use of perforated pipes made of glass, which are pressed into the dump. The pipes are called gas-wells. The gathered gas is then used as fuel to the engine which runs the generator that produces the electricity.
