Sustainable living in Malmö

The area exhibits examples of sustainable solutions for water, sewage, traffic, energy, waste and biological diversity.

Västra hamnen is a national example of an ecologically sustainable and densely populated area, which stimulates creativity, education and economic growth while being characterized by pluralism in terms of architecture, society and culture.

The area is an important part of Malmö’s efforts to become an attractive place to live and work. Everything from apartment buildings to schools and industry relate to Malmö’s proximity to the ocean and convey the sensation of being close to the rest of Europe. The area comprises 175 hectares with several ongoing construction and development projects in which multiple actors are collaborating around environmentally friendly solutions, building on experiences from Bo01.  

Bo01

When Malmö hosted the European housing exhibition Bo01 2001, it took the first step in transforming the Västra hamnen into a sustainable residential housing district by building the Bo01 area. Bo01 is located at an old industrial estate, whose land had to be restored before the construction project could start. All the energy that is consumed by the buildings in Bo01 is renewable and there are intelligent systems for both waste management and surface water treatment. The transport systems are also adapted for sustainability, with an extensive public transport system, car pooling and efforts to promote the use of bicycles.

Further steps towards sustainability

There are several ongoing construction projects in Västra hamnen, where energy efficiency, sustainability and quality are constantly developing and improving. Recently, the Flagghusen area has been finished, where focus has been on achieving sustainable housing to a reasonable cost. The next construction project is Fullriggaren, which will exhibit new solutions in sustainable building and renewable energy.
